Kathal
Kofta is a very delicious Bihari dish. Basically the Koftas are specially prepared fried
spicy mashed kathal balls dipped into specially prepared curry. Generally it is
had in lunch or dinner with rice or roti/ parathas.

Ingredients
for Kofta:
1. 500 gm raw kathal (Jackfruit)
2. Edible Oil (as per requirement)
3. Garlic and ginger paste one tea spoon each
4. Salt to taste
5. Red chili powder and Turmeric powder, half tea
spoon full each
6. Besan (Bengal gram powder) one tea spoon full
Preparing
the Kofta:
Cut the raw kathal into large pieces and boil
them in a pressure cooker till 3 whistles. After cooling, peel them and mash
them well. Add salt to taste and other ingredients i.e. Garlic and ginger
paste, red chili powder and Turmeric powder, besan and mix it well. Make small
balls of this mashed mixture and deep fry them into heated edible oil. Keep the
Koftas aside after removing them from oil.
Preparing
the Curry:
Ingredients:
Onion 2 chopped, garlic 5-6 pieces,
ginger 1 tea spoon cut into pieces, 1 tomato cut into pieces, cloves 4-5 pieces,
1 small and one large cardamom, one small pc cinnamon, Dhaniya (coriander)
powder 1 tea spoon, jeera (cumin) powder 1 tea spoon, black pepper powder half
spoon, red chili powder 1 tea spoon, turmeric powder 1 tea spoon, Oil 4 table
spoon, salt to taste.
Procedure:
Heat 1-2 spoon oil in kadai, add
Onion 2 chopped, garlic 5-6 pieces, ginger 1 tea spoon cut into pieces, 1
tomato cut into pieces, cloves 4-5 pieces, 1 small and one large cardamom, one
small pc cinnamon and sauté, remove the mixture and after cooling grind the
mixture well in a mixer.
Again fry this mixture in oil and add
salt, Dhaniya(coriander) powder 1 tea spoon, jeera (cumin) powder 1 tea spoon,
black pepper powder half spoon, red chili powder 1 tea spoon, turmeric powder 1
tea spoon, and cook on medium flame till the spices are cooked and oil starts
oozing out.
Add water to make curry and allow it
to boil. Stop when the curry has reached desired thickness. Garnish the curry
with green coriander leaves and cream or pure ghee.
Add the Koftas about 5 minutes before serving.
The delicious Bihari dish, Kathal Kofta is now ready to serve and can
be had with rice, roti or Paratha.
